Razvoj ratarske proizvodnje u Republici Srpskoj

    SUMMARY

    The Republic of Srpska has 2 482,117 hectares of land in total. There are 1 298 000 hectares of agricultural land and 1 055 402 hectares of forests out of the total. There are 908 521 hectares of arable land out of the total area of agricultural land.

    Out of the total area of arable land there are 616 548 hectares of tillage, 54 358 hectares of orchards and 693 hectares of vineyards. Natural meadows make 236 922 hectares and pastures make 385 734 hectares.

    70 % of agricultural land is located in hilly and mountainous regions at altitudes of 500800 meters and 30% is located on plains.

    In 1988-1990 28% of the total number of hectares of tillage was not cropped and in 1997; 42 % was not cropped. What the trend in utilization of land will be after 2000. wil depend on the density of population in the regions, agrarian policy, investments, political situation and the implementation of the programme of utilization of agricultural land made by regions.

    A plan of sowing should be made in details by regions, kinds of crops, purpose of production and the like. In order to cron the aailable arable land and increase the yield it is necessary to produce or ensure sufficient quantity of labcled seed for about 400 000 hectares.
