SUMMARY
The objective of the paper was to compare body dimensions and indices of today's grey Alp race reared on the mountain holding Gacko with those of the same race but imported long ago (1950's) and with those of the original Austrian grey Alp one in order to establish successful selection work on the breeding of the grey Alpic race, as the result of the statistical differences and of the rearing-selection programs used. Body dimensions of the cows imported from Austria in the 1950's (Pajanovic et al., 1957) were thus compared with those of today's Gatacko and Austrian cow of the grey Alp race. The research results have shown that, with respect to the most significant body dimensions (back, sacral heights and carcass length) and frame index, no statistically significant difference (P>0.05) existed between today's Gatacko (122.7 cm, 125.0 cm, 159.3cm and 129.9%) and Austrian grey alp cow with back height of 122.3 cm , sacral one of 124.5 cm, carcass length 161.1 cm and frame index 131.8%. However, these body dimensions and indices seemed to be considerably statistically higher than those in the grey Alp race imported on the Gacko area in the 1950's with back height amounting to 118.2 cm, sacral one to 121.0 cm, carcass length to 137.5 cm and frame index to 116.3%.
